Here’s my artwork for Homegrown
The concept of the "evil eye" or the "buri nazar" shows up in cultures across the world. And yet–as is often the case with the Urdu language–it is the word's articulation in the traditional Nastaliq script that gives this phenomenon its own beautiful name.
My handpainted artwork pays streetside tribute to the idea of "Chashm-e-bad-duur"
(चश्म-ए-बद-दूर), a phrase that doubles up as a charm of good luck and as a coy compliment alike. Roughly translating to "may the evil eye not fall upon you", this invocation is often present on the sides of trucks just as often as in the messages of lovers.
